Teddy Bears Picnic

I'm off to Melodys Teddy Bears Picnic again today. I was going to let these two bears go on their own, but after seeing Melodys' gorgeous bunny today I thought I would also let my little bunny go along for the picnic as well.
Well it is almost Easter!
This is my very first attempt at bear making. He is quite large, about 17 inches high. I was working at the time in a patchwork and craft shop and we had so many inquiries into making bears that my boss decided to offer a Bear Making Workshop. Of course I had to have a go at this!
I loved it! I couldn't stop at one and so a female version was the next bear I made!
Even though they are quite large, I still made them both entirely by hand and they did take me quite a bit of time to make.
This little fellow is quite a bit smaller and is made of mohair. He has a little watch to make sure he isn't late to the picnic!!!
I'm going to see who else is playing today over at Melodys!
Enjoy your day!

Cyndi, a New Shop and My March Finishes!

Last night I was lucky enough to see Cyndi Lauper in concert in Brisbane. I saw her quite a few years back and last nights show was just as good, if not better. She sang a lot of songs off her Memphis Blues CD as well as many of her famous hits. It was a brilliant show and I could have stayed for hours more listening to her and her wonderful Blues band.
She really knows how to get the crowd going and they loved her. She even got right in there, amongst the audience on quite a few occasions. It was a terrific night.
Today we had a sneak peek at my friend Tereasa's new shop (Homespun & Beautiful)... opening very soon! There is already heaps in there, gorgeous fabrics, patterns, buttons, books... My kind of shop!!!
There is so much room and a big workshop area out the back - great for us to do some stitching and quilting!
Look at all those gorgeous fabrics! It's all very exciting and I'm so glad it's only 15 minutes away from home!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!
Now I can show you some of my finishes from last weekend's retreat (some will have to wait until April as they are swaps and gifts). Firstly I made my MIL a block keeper. The fabric has the names of quilt blocks all over it and I thought very appropriate!
I have a tutorial HERE if you want to make one yourself.. they are very handy! This is the block keeper rolled out with another Tis the Season block on it, which I also finished!
One of the ladies at the retreat had a really useful steering wheel cover being used in her car and I made one for myself. My car (being black) gets very hot in the summer and sometimes I can't even hold the steering wheel, so this will come in very handy. It just slips over the wheel!
I must have know something as I only bought these 3 fat quarters the day before and that is exactly what I needed to make the cover.
Remember yesterdays photo of the pink and cream squares with flowers embroidered on it? Well those bands became the top of this pretty cosmetics bag that I also made. It's a Faeries in my Garden pattern and part of their Gift of the Month that I am currently in. It was a bit fiddly to make, but well worth it in the end. Will make a lovely present for someone????
And finally, I also finished (completely) my Lynette Andersons quilt "My Garden".
I backed, and quilted it this weekend and put the binding on... Nice to get this one finished!
Phew! I'm exhausted ha ha!
Finally my Opam finishes is looking a little healthier.
Hope you are all having a wonderful, creative week!

What Makes Me Happy 28/3/2011

Making me happy this week is the wonderful 4 days I've just spent on my Retreat at Tamborine Mountain. My boot was well and truly packed and I haven't even put in my machine yet!

This retreat's theme was "Cabin Fever" with a lot of emphasis on the Log Cabin block. So I took along my first ever Log Cabin Quilt, one of the first quilts I've made, making my room very comfy and warm!
I got HEAPS done and I will show you all in another post some of my finishes. Some I'll have to hide for awhile as they are presents and swaps! I am very happy with what I managed to make over the 4 days.
We're always given gorgeous handmade name tags and this retreat was no exception.

I love these retreats so much, you learn so many things from all the wonderful, generous people who go there.
You get to catch up with friends who live long distances away!
"Happy Hour" was especially wonderful this time as I caught up with old friends and made lots of new friends.
Of course the traditional Saturday night dress up didn't dissappoint! I laughed so much that night, I went to bed with my face still aching!!!!
These girls really know how to have a great time!

As well as our handmade name badges, we're also given a lovely handmade memento of our retreat. How cute were this Retreats gifts! Cute little chicken pincushions complete with log cabin block bodies! This is our tables "hens party" ha ha!!!
Show and Tell is always very popular too and Marilyn's Log Cabin (with a twist) quilt just took my breath away.
I love the stories behind some of the quilts as well!
Just a sneak peek of something I made over the weekend! I still have lots to show you and I will get to that!
I want to thank my youngest son who made this whole weekend a reality for me. As my husband is away at the moment, it was up to Jack to look after the house and the cats and he managed to get himself to and from school for 2 days (without Mum there to drive him) and do all the rest as well. It's nice to know I can rely on him and trust him! I am very lucky he's such a great kid! Thanks Jack... you know how much I mean this! xx
A big Thank You to all the wonderful ladies who came along and made this Retreat such a memorable long weekend for me. I am very happy I went along and joined in all the fun! I cannot wait for the next one!!!!

Sorry about the tiny photo...but I just wanted to show you this awesome pic of James on the Great Wall of China. This gorgeous boy of mine is emailing and sending photos to us almost every day - which is making me very, very happy. His trip to China is over and he was to spend the next couple of weeks in Hong Kong, but he's decided to now go to Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. He is making such wonderful memories and having a ball!
Happy Monday to you all and I hope you have an awesome day!

It wasn't just all fun and games......

Apart from all the good food and laughing and chatting, I did manage to get a few things done this past weekend at the retreat. I finished off the last two blocks of Lynette Andersons "My Garden" BOM which I then put together adding sashings and borders.....
Now all I have to do is quilt and bind it.
With some of the leftover fabric from that quilt I made a Log Cabin block placemat. I need this for another retreat I am going to this weekend. The theme is "Cabin Fever". My placemat has a pocket on the side for the cutlery.
I know I can hear you saying "Is she really going to two Quilt Retreats, two weekends in a row?" and yes, it just turned out that way and I really didn't want to miss either of them!!! I also managed to get the top finished on a quilt for a friend of mine who has just had a baby. I made a "Stacked Coin" quilt like this one for her first baby and she asked me to make another one for the second baby - this one using the funky fabric range "Bliss". Just have to quilt and bind this one now also.
This one I completely finished. I made the same table runner for my brother for Christmas and I loved it so much I wanted to make another one. It's in the Lumiere range by French General.
Jenny and Helen made these gorgeous outfits for their bears while we were there. The hats and dresses are made out of pintucked fabric, embroidered lace and satin. Aren't they gorgeous?
Helen's bear was my back seat buddy in the car on the 3 hour trip home. She was very quiet and made me feel a little under dressed! he he!!!
Well I had better stop chatting and get myself packed and ready for this weekends retreat which starts tomorrow... Four days of sewing heaven!
I will (hopefully) be back to normal next week and catch up with the weekly posts I've missed this week, as well as get around to replying to everyone's comments and emails. Things have been pretty crazy around here lately!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!!!

What Makes Me Happy 21/3/2011

Making me happy today is spending the entire day watching my son and his mate play soccer! They both made it into the District Soccer team and today played in the try outs for the Regionals.
I am so proud of him to get this far and to give it his all. It was a very hot day and they both got burnt and covered in mud as the fields were still very wet from the weekend rain. That's another thing making me happy... I don't have to wash his uniform after today. It was almost black by the afternoon. Unfortunately he didn't make it into the Regionals but we're both very happy with what he has achieved.
I also managed to get a bit of stitching done between games - Happy!!!
I've also spent the last 3 days being very happy on a Quilt Retreat up in Kingaroy. I had so much fun and it was wonderful to be back at this gorgeous farm, being spoilt rotten with yummy food and beautiful surroundings. The weather was perfect... light rain for most of the weekend - just the right weather for sewing.
I am very happy with what I managed to work on and finish over the weekend (more of that later).I went with 2 of my best friends, caught up with another wonderful friend and met 4 new friends!
It was such a wonderful weekend. We all achieved so much, ate the best home made cooking, laughed ourselves silly, stayed up late and chatted consistently, oh and we also bought some goodies from the shop to bring home with us! - I'll have to show you later as well. If I don't put this post up soon, it will be Tuesday!
Thanks for a magic weekend girls!
And thanks Jack for a top day today!
Hope you are all having a wonderful Monday!

Teresa xx
